Things to Consider
In-Person Consultation
KPERS is here to help. If you'd prefer to discuss your retirement options, the application or any KPERS questions in person, you can call our office to make an appointment with a Benefits Representative.
Call or email KPERS: 1-888-275-5737 | kpers@kspers.gov
Working After Retirement
Do you plan to work during retirement to stay busy? There are some things you need to know before you punch back in for a KPERS employer. Keep in mind, there are no rules if you go back to work for a non-KPERS employer.
Life Insurance
Life insurance ends when you leave or move to a position not covered by KPERS. However, you can continue coverage on your own. You have until 60 days after you end employment to submit your form.
You have 2 options:
Individual whole life insurance | Portable group term life insurance
State and Federal Income Taxes
In general, Retirement System benefits, including the $6,000 retiree death benefit, are subject to federal income tax, but not Kansas state income tax. This is because you already paid state taxes on your contributions while you were working. If you move to another state, check if your retirement benefit is taxable in that state.
